Upcoming This Month
Mission Sunday, August 9th/10th
for the needs of the Archdiocese of Trivandrum in Kerala, Inda
On the second weekend in August at all masses, Rev. Paul Sunny will be speaking about the works and the needs of the Latin Catholic Archdiocese of Trivandrum, the capital of the southern Indian state of Kerala. Trivandrum has about 280,000 Catholics, constituting about 11% of the total population. Ninety percent of the people belong to the the many fishing villages in the region and rely for their livelihood on fishing and fishing-related activities. About 10% of the region’s residents are farm workers and recent converts to Catholicism from low caste Hindus.
Unemployment and poverty are rampant in both the fishing and farming communities and the archdiocese depends on outside contributions to support its clergy, seminarians, catechists, as well as its humanitarian projects, which serve orphans, the aged and the destitute. Contributions help provide shelter, food, health care, and education the neediest in the community.
In 2021, Hurricane “Tauktae” left hundreds of families homeless. And while 2021 was especially bad, each year’s monsoons bring more erosion and destroy homes of fisherman who live along the sea.
The archdiocese, which has yet to recover from the crippling effects of financial devastation caused by the pandemic lockdowns, humbly requests contributions from the Newman community this August. Donations of every amount are greatly appreciated.
