Welcome Cal Newman Faculty

Uniting faculty across the Bay Area who have been, and continue to be, connected to Newman Hall–Holy Spirit Parish.

For over 118 years, Newman Hall–Holy Spirit Parish has served the students of UC Berkeley. In addition, it has been a Roman Catholic spiritual home for generations of faculty members and their spouses—not only from UC Berkeley, but also from institutions across the Bay Area, including Stanford, Cal State East Bay, the University of San Francisco, Holy Names University, and others.

A longstanding tradition of Newman’s faculty community is a semiannual gathering over lunch or dinner, offering an opportunity for fellowship, connection, and thoughtful conversation. These gatherings often explore topics relevant to the academic vocation, such as the impact of AI on education and faith, how Catholic faith informs life as faculty at a public institution, and the ways in which teaching can be understood as a vocation.

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.”

Proverbs 1:5

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the servant of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

Timothy 3:16–17
