ANNOUNCEMENTS

EARLY BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT DEADLINE: Announcements for the bulletin for the weekend of July 6 are due no later than Sunday, June 29.

MONDAY NIGHT MOVIE:Though you know from the start just how it's going to end, Breach, based on the true story of a treasonous FBI operative, is an edge-of-the-seat thriller. A "compelling, intelligent drama." Monday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m.

ELECTRONIC GIVINGNewman Hall - Holy Spirit Parish recently set up a way for you to donate electronically. Many of you already pay your bills online, and now you may arrange to contribute to the parish the same way, either on your own through your bank or through us and our third party provider. There are handouts in the lobby and at the Reception Desk with more detailed information, or feel free to call Peg in our Finance Office at (510) 848-7812 if you have further questions.

THE PAULISTS are away this weekend at the 150th Celebration of Paulists in Washington, D.C. Father John Nuelle (German pronunciation: "NULE"), a La Sallette priest and missionary who spent 28 years in Madagascar, will be here to preside and preach a mission appeal. Father Brendan Carr, from Ireland and the African Mission Society and currently living at St Augustine's, will assist in presiding at a couple of morning liturgies. Jack Nuelle spent this last academic year at the School of Applied Theology just down the street from us. There are yellow envelopes for the Mission Collection, and they'll be on the table in the back of the chapel. Please be as generous as you can for the Missions.

LIGHT-HEARTED LEARNING: The first of this Thursday night series will be "Music You Love" — that speaks to you (and others) of all that it means to be human and Christian. Bring your music (CD/tape) and share with us. Father Campbell will be hosting. Thursday, June 26, at 7:30 p.m.

PASTORAL COUNCIL: Join the Pastoral Council! Do you have an interest in serving your parish? Would you like to be a part of shaping the quality of life in our faith community? Are you eager to lead and inspire others to realize the mission of Newman Hall/Holy Spirit? You may have a call to be a member of the Pastoral Council. Nominations are available now from the hospitality table and the Pastoral Council page of the parish website (http://calnewman.org) and are due Sunday, June 29th, to the front desk or by email to sic@berkeley.edu. Questions? Leave a message for the Pastoral Council at the reception desk or send an email to Susan Cass at sic@berkeley.edu or Fr. Bernie Campbell at bjprael@aol.com.

YAGGIES & A'S BASEBALL: Sat., July 26, 12 noon. Come watch the A's beat the Rangers! The game starts at 1:05 p.m., so we'll meet at the end of the bridge from BART at noon to get tickets. Contact Adam Booth (booth.adam@gmail.com) for more information.

SOCIAL SERVICE COORDINATING COMMITTEE SECOND MEETING: In response to interest expressed in the Parish Survey and at a first exploratory meeting, this newly-forming working group will gather for a second time on Sunday, June 29, after the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Miss the first gathering? Please come to this one. Our purpose is to organize/coordinate activities that will allow Newman Hall/Holy Spirit Parish members to get to know each other better as we endeavor to serve the community beyond our boundaries. Come to the Newman Library at around 10:45 a.m. on the 29th, and help us discern how best to achieve those goals. The meeting shouldn't last more than an hour or so.

PAULIST CELEBRATION: October 3-5, Fr. Paul Robichaud will be spending a few days with us to help celebrate the Paulist Fathers' 150th Anniversary. Paul taught history at Catholic University for a few years and is currently the Paulist archivist and coordinator for our anniversary celebrations. Fr. Campbell would really appreciate a few volunteers to help design our celebration here. Please give him a call at (510) 848-7812 or e-mail him at bjprael@aol.com if you would like to help. He would like to have at least one event where people from our six Eucharistic Communities could all gather to celebrate along with our long-time friends from the University and theological, ecumenical and interreligious communities. It is also Homecoming Weekend, which presents some constraints but also possibilities as well.

LOAVES AND FISHES NEEDS BACKUP ASSISTANCE: Now that we have Coordinators in place, please consider helping out by serving as one of the backup assistants or as a member of a team for the Loaves & Fishes Community Dinner. This includes helping with maintaining equipment, Friday food prep, and Christmas dinners, as well as other ways to help out. You can contact Joan Liston by leaving your name and contact information at the Newman front desk or e-mail the church at calnewman@gmail.com; in both cases clearly mark the messages to the attention of Joan of Loaves & Fishes.

If you are - or know - parents who have received an adverse or negative prenatal diagnosis for a child yet in the womb, you are encouraged to visit the URL above.

Summer Appreciations....

Finally, I get to take a deep breath! At last, the "marathon"—which began in September with preparations for Christmas, followed almost immediately by a very early Lent, then Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, First Eucharist, and Confirmation—is over. I feel very appreciative of the many volunteers whose selfless and constant contributions make up the beautiful and unique tapestries of our liturgies.

I feel deeply grateful for our forty or so choir members. Each week they commit to about five hours of ministry. They have a brief respite during the summer, when we don't have the mid-week rehearsals, just the hour of preparation before the Sunday Mass. They do take breaks as they need—and the wonderful flexibility of all members is evident in that, no matter who is able to be present on a given Sunday, they work together beautifully.

Last week some of these singers "moonlighted" by climbing ladders to hang the scrolls which highlight the Mission of the Paulists—Seek Peace, Reach Out, Bring Unity—as they celebrate 150 years. I am grateful to architects T.J. and Klara Komorous-Towey, who created these beautiful scrolls.

We are fortunate to have a budget, thanks to your generous contributions, which enables me to choose from a wide variety of music sources and references. This means that the singers use not only a hymnbook, but many different "octavos". This also involves a huge amount of collating and filing, which choir member Tamara Williamson has been doing most graciously for many years.

The presence of God in the Word means that our Lectionaries for both Sundays and weekdays are well used. Lu Arenson, a member of the Tuesday Theology group, is in the process of making beautiful new covers and securing the bindings for these books. Thank you to all lectors, who devote time preparing to proclaim the Word to us. And thanks not least of all to Jeff Dhont for his selfless work with new lectors and coordinating scheduling.

Thank you to all Communion Ministers, and to Gary Addiego who trains new ministers a few times each year. And special thanks to Linda Fitzgerald and the many volunteer sacristans who quietly work behind the scenes so that our Liturgies flow and are welcoming and beautiful.

And finally, on Thursday July 3rd, 7:30–9 p.m., you will have an opportunity to sing some of your favorites in a "Community Sing" in anticipation of July 4. As I am now a U.S. citizen (not only by successfully listing the 13 original colonies!), my fellow staff members thought it appropriate that I do this.
