IT'S A BOY — NO! IT'S A GIRL — NO! — IT'S A PIANO!! When I joined the Newman/Holy Spirit pastoral staff in August 1994, I discovered that one of the items on the "wish list" was a new piano. I'm happy to announce that this has finally become a reality, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of many people, and the constant desire of the community for excellence in worship. Newman was gifted by a parishioner with the Chickering piano many years ago, and this has served well. When Fr. Campbell asked me about 12 months ago to "do some homework", I must admit I enjoyed the task enormously, and was also very aware of my responsibility to the community. The piano I finally chose is a 1970, one-owner, 6'7" Bösendorfer — one of the most beautiful and reliable pianos in the world. It has been beautifully maintained and restored. I feel it will be a worthy accompaniment to our liturgy for at least the next 100 years.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to know how to begin this, so I will just state this simply: The time has come for me to step down as Coordinator of the Food/Kitchen portion of the Loaves and Fishes Community Dinner, effective this coming September. Autumn marks five years that I have held this position, and almost eight years since starting as a kitchen volunteer. I am staying on until September in order to assist in finding another Coordinator or Committee of individuals who can carry on this aspect of our Loaves and Fishes dinner.

Ellen Cianciarulo, the founder of Newman Hall Loaves and Fishes, believed that our meal should be worthy of serving any guest that we would invite into our homes. This has been our goal in attempting to create our portion of a most wonderful festive evening for our guests.

It has been a great pleasure and honor to be a part of our group of talented and devoted volunteers who help carry out this aspect of our mission. Each of us contributes a bit of ourselves in order to provide our guests a place of celebration as we gather once a month to enjoy our meal, and each of us contributes to this most basic gesture of caring, the offering of a meal done with great care and love.

At this time, I ask all members of Newman Holy Spirit parish who are searching for a way to help others in a place that brings joy to all of us to consider helping out. We need individuals who would like to either take a leadership role, or help recruit individuals who can participate in coordination. Without your help, our dinner cannot continue.

Here are some of the many tasks that Coordination involves: Taking inventory, making out a menu, communicating with shoppers/making out grocery lists, maintaining kitchen supplies, coordinating Friday food preparation, and arranging for coordination of activities on the day of the dinner.

If it is not possible for one individual to act as overall coordinator and perform all these tasks, I propose the formation of a committee of co-coordinators who can share responsibility. I welcome any support/thoughts/ideas/skills you have during this time of transition, as well as your willingness to participate throughout the summer as well as starting in September.

Please keep me in your prayers, as I pray as well that we may all continue to serve those who call upon us for our compassion and our skills, and that our talents are used where they are most needed.

Peace, Joan Liston
